Why was Thomas Jefferson the principle writer of The Declaration of Independence?

According to John Adams’ account, Jefferson nominated Adams to be the principle writer. Adams refused, deferring to Jefferson because “you are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear as the head of this business. Reason second, I am obnoxious, suspected and unpopular. You are very much otherwise.”
