Should an 84 yr old be given a kidney transplant?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/health/chi-old-kidney-transplant-18-sep18,0,1266170.story

This story is primarily about the use of ‘expanded criteria’ organs (older, less than perfect, etc), but it’s worth mentioning that the recipient is 84 years old. Odds are, he’s on Medicare. Considering the average life expectancy in the US is approximately 77 years old, is giving an 84 year old a kidney transplant that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (Transplant centers charge $400,000-$500,000; I don’t know what CMS reimburses them) and anti-rejection meds @ 60 grand per year – was that a cost-effective choice?

Something to think about.
